This study was to explore critically identity of children with developmental delays in Korea, and suggest valuable implications on development of special education in Korea. Research questions are what identity of children with developmental delays, what to give opportunities to, and to study the reason of increase in appearance rate of children with developmental delays. The results are as follows. First, while it is thought that children with development delays aged 3 through 9, consisted of children with disabilities such as intellectual disabilities, autism, emotional disturbance etc in Korea, it is suggested that children with development delays, may consist of who excepting children with disabilities such as intellectual disabilities, autism, emotional disturbance etc in US. Second, it is not seemed that the number of children with mild disabilities such as learning disabilities are not increased, though with children with developmental delays as special education subjects in ‘special education laws for persons with disabilities and others’ since 2007. Rather, the number of children with learning disabilities and emotional disturbed are decreased. Third, the reason of increasing prevalence of children with developmental delays are suggested that first, it’s concept include other disabilities like autism as subgroups, second, its age limit force various disabilities to categorize as children with developmental delays. Suggestions as follows. First, the concept of children with development delays have to be modified into its concepts of US. Second, se need to study the reason of decreasing of children with mild disabilities such as learning disabilities and emotional disturbed.

This study attempted to find out the difficulties experienced by families with disabilities in the COVID-19 situation and how to support them.To this end, focus group interviews were conducted by dividing 35 parents of disabled students in Seoul, Gyeongnam, and Jeonnam into six groups. Eight major topics and 33 subtopics were derived as a result of this study, and the contents of major topics were overall family difficulties, child development problems, remote class adaptation problems, family efforts, positive aspects, gratitude for support, educational support needs, and institutional support needs. Throughout the COVID-19 period, families with disabilities experienced difficulties in their families’ entire lives. In addition to the overall decline in development of children with disabilities, there were various difficulties such as family conflicts, economic difficulties, and difficulties in adapting to remote classes. Compared to the previous period, parents of students with disabilities had increased interest in school education and their children’s desire for development was growing. In the wake of the COVID-19 period, it is necessary to reflect the increased interest and demand for education for children with disabilities and actively and effectively carry out education for students with disabilities in cooperation with their families.

This study was conducted to find out the trends and characteristics of research related to women with developmental disabilities in Korea since 2000. In this study, a total of 101 papers related to women with developmental disabilities that meet the analysis criteria were analyzed. The research problems of this study were as follows: First, what is the trend of research related to women with developmental disabilities in Korea? Second, what are the characteristics of research related to women with developmental disabilities in Korea? The trends(year of publication, field of journal research, method of research) and characteristics(research objects, age of subjects, types of disability, degree of disability, and major keyword) of research related to women with developmental disabilities in Korea were analyzed according to the research problems and analysis criteria. The result of the research is as follows: First, research on women with developmental disabilities has increased since 2011, there were many papers published in academic journals in the field of special education, and qualitative research methods were the most used. Second, there were few studies on people over the age of 60, most of studies have targeted at people with intellectual disabilities, and most studies have not mentioned the degree of disability or targeted at mild disability. Based on the results and discussions of this study, the direction for the development of research related to women with developmental disabilities was presented.

This study was conducted to examine the effects of Class-Wide Positive Behavior Supports (CW-PBS) using graphic symbols on problem and alternative behaviors of students with developmental disabilities. Universal supports (Tier 1) were provided to seven first-grade high school students enrolled in a special school, and targeted supports (Tier 2) were provided to two of them. In Tier 1, all students were taught expected behaviors in the classroom and problem behaviors were recorded. In Tier 2, students with a high frequency of problem behaviors despite Tier 1 were given Functional Communication Training (FCT) and alternative behaviors were measured. In particular, graphic symbols were used in the development of implementation materials for PBS to take into account the visual strengths and cognitive limitations of students with developmental disabilities. The results of the study can be used as a basis for expanding the practice of universal and targeted supports for teacher-centred CW-PBS and for establishing a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) in both special and mainstream schools in South Korea.

In this study, the effect of functional communication training(FCT) on self-injurious behavior in preschooler with developmental delay and the maintenance effect of intervention were investigated. The participant of the study was a developmentally delayed 5-year2-month preschooler enrolled in a special class at an integrated day-care center exhibiting self-injurious behavior. The independent variable of the study is functional communication training, and the dependent variable is Preschooler’s self-injury behavior. An reversal design (ABAB design) was used to verify the changes in the self-injurious behaviors of the study participant. Functional evaluation was conducted on the self-injurious behaviors of preschooler participating in the study, and functional communication interventions were planned and implemented based on the results of the functional evaluation. The results of the study showed that the frequency of self-injurious behaviors in preschooler decreased when the intervention was implemented, and the frequency of self-injurious behaviors increased when the intervention was removed for the reversal phase. When the intervention condition was applied again, the frequency of self-injurious behaviors decreased. The decrease in the frequency of self-injurious behavior continued in the maintenance period. In conclusion, this study suggests that functional communication training is an effective strategy for self-injurious behaviors in preschoole with developmental delay, discusses the effectiveness of functional communication training for self-injurious behaviors, and suggests its limitations.

다문화 장애아동의 통합교육을 지원하는 특수교사 경험 Experience of Special Teachers Supporting Inclusive Education for Children with Disabilities from Multicultural Family
The purpose of this study is to analyze the experiences of special teachers who educate children with disabilities who grow up in an increasing number of multicultural families at school sites. First, what are the preventive efforts of special teachers to teach children with disabilities from multicultural families? Second, what are the efforts after disability of special teachers to teach children with disabilities from multicultural families? This study was conducted as a qualitative case study method that can obtain in-depth information on the "integrated education experience of children with multicultural disabilities" through the voices of five people with more than a year of experience in educating children with disabilities in elementary school. Preventive efforts of special teachers include medical services and early language intervention services for early detection of disabilities, and post-mortem efforts include community linkage, improvement of expertise in multicultural education, supplementation of diagnostic tools, and establishment of a parent counseling system. Through this study, it is expected to find implications for educational support for students with disabilities from multicultural families and the direction and application of other efficient and practical policies.

The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of using the simultaneous prompting procedure in badminton physical education classes on the leisure sports competencies of students with developmental disabilities. To achieve the research objectives, the Multiple Probe Design across participants design was employed with three high school students with developmental disabilities as the subjects. The research results showed that the competitive physical education classes using the simultaneous prompting procedure improved the badminton basic skills, game rules, and sportsmanship of students with developmental disabilities in leisure badminton. These results were generalized and maintained up to 3-4 weeks after the intervention ended. This study provided evidence of the effectiveness of the simultaneous prompting procedure in physical education classes for students with developmental disabilities. The significance of this research lies in presenting scientific evidence that the simultaneous prompting procedure can be utilized as a useful teaching and learning method in the field of physical education and school physical education classes for students with developmental disabilities. Furthermore, these research outcomes are expected to have a positive impact on the future of physical and leisure activities for students with developmental disabilities.

The purpose of this study is to identify the degree of importance and implementation of learning participation-teaching strategies required by lifelong education professionals for the disabled in the field in order to provide high-quality lifelong education programs to people with developmental disabilities. In order to achieve the purpose of the study, a survey was conducted targeting 137 people who specialize in lifelong education for the disabled, including employees of institutions that operate lifelong education for the developmentally disabled and teachers and instructors with experience in operating lifelong education programs for developmental disabilities in adulthood. The basic data for the survey was analyzed using paired-sample t-test and IPA, and the results of the data analysis are as follows. First, a significant difference was found as a result of comparing and analyzing the importance and implementation level of lifelong education experts with disabilities regarding the learning participation-teaching strategies used in the field of lifelong education for people with developmental disabilities. Second, as a result of the IPA analysis of learning participation-teaching strategies, the strategies in areas that require priority support included teaching strategies included multisensory teaching, community-referenced teaching, and community-centered teaching, and behavioral guidance strategies included self-inspection. On the other hand, curriculum restructuring (teaching adaptation) did not appear to include any strategies in the second quadrant, which requires priority support. The results of this study are significant in that they secured data on learning participation-teaching strategies that require priority support for professional personnel operating lifelong education programs for people with developmental disabilities and provided basic data for professional improvement measures to provide high-quality programs.

발달장애인의 생애주기와 성별에 따른 건강행태 분석 Analysis of Health Behavior According to Life Cycle and Gender of People with Developmental Disabilities
This study was conducted for the purpose of contributing to resolving health inequality for people with developmental disabilities by analyzing differences in health behaviors according to the life cycle and gender of people with developmental disabilities. Analysis data is a survey on the work and life of people with developmental disabilities (2022), and the subjects of the study are 1,768 people with developmental disabilities who participated in the survey. Two-way ANOVA was conducted using the SPSS for analysis, and the main effects and interaction effects of the life cycle and gender for each health risk factor were verified. As a result of the study, firstly, smoking, drinking, and stress problems had main effects of significant life cycle and genders, and overweight had significant effects by life cycle and sex problems by genders. Secondly, the effect of interaction between life cycle and genders was significant in all health risk factors such as smoking, drinking, overweight, sexual and stress problems. Based on study results, it was suggested that prior consideration should be given to sex problems in adolescent men, men’s smoking in adulthood, women’ stress in adulthood, men’s drinking in senescence, and women’s overweight when we support the health and health of people developmental disabilities.

This study was conducted to shed light on the work experiences of adults with developmental disabilities employed in social economy organizations and the impact of employment on their lives. To achieve this, in-depth interviews were conducted with five adult individuals with developmental disabilities, five of their parents and five supervisors. A combination of purposive and snowball sampling was applied to recruit research participants. Data collection took place approximately six weeks from early February to mid-March 2023. Thematic analysis revealed 4 main themes and 14 subthemes. Regarding work experiences, the emerging themes included “sustaining the job and growing in the workplace with diverse support,” “developing a new identity as an employee and diligently working,” and “gaining the ability and flexibility to utilize welfare benefits.” The study also affirmed that employment brings about changes in life, such as fostering “self-sufficiency and instilling dreams and hope for the future.” While adults with developmental disabilities, their parents, and supervisors generally shared similar perspectives on work experiences, some differences in their views on job retention were noted. Based on these findings, the study offers measures for job creation and employment stability that reflect the needs and characteristics of adults with developmental disabilities.

This study aimed to examine how music therapy using steel tongue drums affects self-efficacy and peer relationships for adolescents with borderline intellectual functioning in blind spots of educational and social support due to a lack of accurate standards and data. In this study, six adolescents with borderline intellectual functioning participated from Korea Slow Learners Civil Association located in Seoul, and this study was conducted using a single group pre-test and post-test design due to the small sample size. Music therapy using steel tongue drums based on popular music familiar to adolescents, such as popular songs and film music. It was conducted twice a week for 50 minutes per session, including melody and harmony, and two to three-part ensemble playing. Data collected before and after the music therapy intervention were quantitatively analyzed using the Wilcoxon matched paired signed-rank, and the changes of adolescents with intellectual functioning adolescents in the music therapy experience were explored by qualitatively analyzing the video recorded for the entire music therapy session. As a result of this study, adolescents with borderline intellectual functioning who participated in music therapy using steel tongue drums showed a statistically significant difference in self-efficacy and peer relationships. Their responses to music therapy experiences were “trust in themselves,” “effort for growth,” “harmony with others,” and “active relationship building,” confirming that participants positively viewed their capabilities and acquired skills to lead relationships with peers through music therapy using steel tongue drums. This suggests that music therapy using steel tongue drums can be an effective social and emotional intervention that significantly affects the improvement of self-efficacy and peer relationships of adolescents with borderline intellectual functioning.

This study is an experimental study to find out the effect of whole language learning using animation comics on reading and writing skills and story comprehension of students with developmental disabilities. The subjects of the study were three students with developmental disabilities belonging to special classes in elementary schools, and the basic line, intervention, generalization, and maintenance were measured by designing multiple probe basic lines between the subjects. In order to improve reading, writing, and story comprehension, whole language learning was conducted after watching animation. As a result of the study, the reading and writing skills of three students with developmental disabilities improved after applying whole language learning, and the average score improved slightly compared to the basic line, but there was a limit to revealing the effect significantly.

In preparation for the educational practice semester system, which will be fully introduced from 2028 under the Ministry of Education’s policy, this study aims to identify the perception of the practical semester system from the perspective of universities, which are early childhood special educational teachers training institutions, and schools of educational practice cooperation, and to present problems and improvements. In order to achieve this research goal, individual in-depth interviews were conducted with four pre-service early childhood special educational teachers who experienced educational practice, four early childhood special educational teachers with experience in educational practice, two professors of early childhood special education departments with experience in operating educational practice subjects, and two vice principals of special-education schools with kindergartens. The collected data was analyzed by Giorgi (2012)’s descriptive phenomenological psychological method and presented by dividing it into situated structural description and general structural description. As a result, 12 topics and 27 sub-themes were derived according to three situations: preparation for educational practice, process, and evaluation. In the discussion, based on the results of this study, improvement tasks were proposed to efficiently operate the education practice semester system in institutions for training early childhood special teachers, training institutions, and administrative institutions.

읽기장애 및 난독증의 연구동향과 실험연구 분석: 키워드 네트워크 텍스트 분석과 문헌 분석을 적용하여 Analysis of Research Trends and Experimental Studies on Reading Disability and Dyslexia
This study aimed to identify the overall research trend of reading disability in Korea through a literature analysis on reading disability research in Korea, provide relevant implications, and seek directions for future research. To this end, a total of 235 papers published from 2014 to 2023 were analyzed for network text analysis, subject classification according to the year, and experimental research status targeting major keywords. As a result of the study, frequency analysis and keyword network text analysis were conducted with 1230 keywords selected through literature selection and keyword extraction. As a result of frequency analysis of studies related to reading disabilities, ‘school age’, ‘dyslexia’, ‘reading’, ‘learning disability’, ‘reading disability’, ‘reading comprehension’, and ‘reading fluency’ were in order. As a result of analyzing the research topics, analysis and trend research accounted for the largest portion with 135 papers, followed by teaching and learning papers with 47 papers. Among teaching and learning papers, there are 33 experimental papers, 12 papers are pronunciation-centered approaches, and 2 papers are holistic language approaches, with a large portion of domestic papers focusing on pronunciation-centered approaches. In connection centrality, mediation centrality, and proximity centrality, the keywords except for ‘reading’ did not rank high, but ‘learning’, ‘intervention’, and ‘program’ showed high rankings. As a result of confirming various intervention methods, the balanced teaching method has a significant effect on overall improvement of language skills such as decoding, fluency and comprehension. Since children and teachers can interact and learn an integrated language system through a balanced approach from the time they first learn to read in the early school age, this teaching method will be useful when applied to the field. However there is a lack of papers on balanced approach intervention experiments targeting dyslexic students. In the future, it is necessary to conduct an experiment targeting school-age students to verify the effect.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether an art therapy program changes the problem behavior of children with autism spectrum disorder and self-injurious behavior. The subject of the study was a 9-year-old male child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. The art therapy program was structured and implemented on the basis of differential reinforcement of incompatible behavior(DRI). The program was implemented for a total of 22 sessions, once or twice a week from May to September 2023. Changes in problem behavior were analyzed by recording art therapy program sessions, and the analysis and the degree of consistency were discussed with one observer and one supervisor. The results of this study are as follows. First, the art therapy program influenced the reduction of problematic behaviors such as self-harm and anger behavior in childr with autism spectrum disorder and self-injurious behaviors. Second, positive changes were observed in the art therapy program for a child with autism spectrum disorder and self-injurious behavior, including improved social behavior such as improved social interaction and task concentration. These findings are significant in that they provide empirical evidence that an art therapy program has a positive effect on reducing problem behaviors and improving social interaction in child with autism spectrum disorder and self-injurious behavior, and provide empirical cases of clinical treatment.

장미회의 창립자 유재춘의 생애 연구 A Study on the Life of Yoo Jae-chun, Founder of the Jangmi-Hoe (Rose Club)
This research aimed to examine the life and activities of Yoo Jae-chun (1932-2004), who played a central role in the treatment and rehabilitation of people with epilepsy in South Korea for over 60 years, and who founded “Jangmi-Hoe” (predecessor to the Korea Bureau Epilepsy and the Korean Epilepsy Society). Except for his sporadic activities from 1964 to 1969, not much is known about Yoo Jae-chun. The research results revealed that Yoo Jae-chun was born in Seoul in 1932 and experienced his first epilepsy symptoms at the age of 11, which led to his dropping out of Sookmyung Girls’ High School. He graduated from the Methodist Theological Seminary in 1957 and became a pastor. In 1964, Yoo Jae-chun and 24 people with epilepsy, including himself, gathered at Ganseok Church in Incheon, forming the “Epilepsy Mission Society” to provide medical treatment and distribute medications for people with epilepsy, later changing its name to “Jangmi-Hoe”. With the support and collaboration of Lena Bell Robinson, a missionary at Incheon Christian Society Building, they provided monthly medical treatment and medication distribution, and in 1966, they established a mobile medical unit for nationwide activities. In 1969, Yoo Jae-chun moved his ministry to Seoul and operated a group home for people with epilepsy, planning to establish an epilepsy care center. In 1980, he was appointed as the director and facility manager of a childcare center in Pyeongtaek acquired by the Methodist Church of Korea. However, he was unable to realize his initial intentions and passed away at the age of 73 in 2004. In this study, the facts could not be sufficiently addressed due to the lack of available information. Therefore, it was suggested that additional research was needed through interviews with individuals who worked with Jaecheon Yoo.

The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of disability acceptance and self-esteem on the relationship between discrimination experience and quality of life of workers with disabilities. For verification, variables such as discrimination experience, disability acceptance, self-esteem, and quality of life scale of workers with disabilities were selected and surveyed and analyzed. The subjects of the study were workers with disabilities living in the Jeollanam-do region, and the analysis was conducted using a statistical program. The results of this study are as follows. First, the discrimination experience of workers with disabilities has a positive relationship with the quality of life. Second, disability acceptance did not have a significant mediating effect on the relationship between discrimination experience and quality of life. Third, self-esteem was found to have a moderating effect on the effect of discrimination experience of workers with disabilities. Fourth, there was a significant mediating effect of disability acceptance in the relationship between discrimination experience and self-esteem, and self-esteem in the relationship between disability acceptance and quality of life. It is necessary to develop and implement a program to improve disability acceptance and self-esteem for workers with disabilities by confirming the positive mediating effect of disability acceptance and self-esteem through research.

The purpose of this study was twofold: First it investigated status of employment, residential type, and leisure activities of post-secondary person with disability, second it explored difficulties in the status of them and improvement plans in terms of quality of life. ‘2021 survey on living status of disabled students after graduation’ and ‘2023 annual report of special education’ were used as the study methods. Main results were as follows. First, employment rate were 34.5% or 48.6% and that was lower than nation-wide average employment rate, and monthly income was also lower than that of nation-wide workers. Second, in residential type, 96.9% of post-secondary persons with disability is living with their parents or relatives, therefore, little were in independent living. Third, 87.1% of the graduates responded ‘relaxing activity’ as leisure activities and the frequency for the activities were low. This study found various problems in the status of employment, residential type, and leisure activities of post-secondary persons with disability and suggested improvement plans to increase quality of life. The results of this study will be useful for experts in education and welfare for people with disabilities to establish new policies.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of developmental art therapy on the self-expression and fine motor improvement of children with intellectual disabilities. The subjects of this study were children with intellectual disabilities, and from July 20 to November 30, 2021, art therapy was conducted for a total of 52 sessions, including pre- and post-tests, three times a week for 50 minutes. To verify the results of the study, self-expression scale and dynamic house-tree-person (K-HTP) were performed for self-expression. For muscle strength tests, developmental assessment of fine motor skills, basic postural activities and evaluation of fine motor exercises from the KISE Developmental Scale were used. In addition, the change process of self-expression and fine muscle improvement of the study subjects was qualitatively analyzed for each session and stage using observation papers for each session. The results of the study are as follows. Firstly, it was found that developmental art therapy had a positive effect on the self-expression of children with intellectual disabilities. In the pre-test of the K-HTP drawing test, the individual struggled with drawing and provided inappropriate responses. However, in the post-test, there were observable changes in the depiction of the coming to meet father and engaging with family. Secondly, developmental art therapy appeared to have a positive impact on the fine motor improvement of intellectually disabled children. Additionally, positive changes were observed in basic postural activities and fine motor exercise assessments. Thirdly, as a result of examining the effects of developmental art therapy on the self-expression and fine motor improvement of children with intellectual disabilities in sessions and stages, it was possible to express positive emotions from self-expression to expressions of disappointing emotions. positive changes were observed. In summary, it was found that developmental art therapy has a positive impact on the self-expression and fine motor improvement of intellectually disabled children.

The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences and the meaning of the experiences among an adult with intellectual disabilities in vocational rehabilitation facilities, during the art therapy designed for self-regulation experience. The study participant was an adult with intellectual disabilities in her late 20s at the F vocational rehabilitation facilities located in S city. Twelve art therapy sessions were conducted, once or twice a week for 60 minutes per session, from July 11 to August 25, 2023. As a result of analysis based on the collected data, a total of six main themes and twelve sub-themes were derived. Based on the results of this study, the participant was able to have the power to self-regulate their emotions and behaviors on the given situation, and could understand the various emotions that she may perceive in relationships with others. These changes had a positive effect on the participant in the process of expressing her emotions and forming self-awareness, thereby enhancing adaptability in daily life. This study is significant because it provided practical data on the experiences of an adult with intellectual disabilities in vocational rehabilitation facilities, during the art therapy designed for self-regulation experience.

특수학교 전공과에 대한 발달장애학생 부모의 인식과 지원 요구 Awareness and Support Needs of Parents of Developmentally Disabled Students in Special School Majoring Courses
The purpose of this research is to provide foundational data for the effective operation of majoring courses at special schools in the future by investigating the awareness of parents of developmentally disabled students regarding these courses, identifying issues in education, and understanding their support needs. The research method involved conducting focus group interviews with parents of developmentally disabled students who were interested in majoring courses in three regional special schools in Daegu City and Gyeongsangbuk-do. The conclusions of the research are as follows. First, parents of developmentally disabled students believe that majoring courses at special schools should focus on establishing daily life adaptation skills and preparing specialized skills and competencies for employment. Second, they expressed dissatisfaction with the difficulties in admission and the lack of program diversity and limited professional staff in special education as a whole. However, they showed satisfaction with post-high school continuing education and various forms of support. Third, majoring courses at special schools emphasize the need for collaboration with professionals outside of the school and expanding program diversity through partnerships with relevant institutions and universities in the community to ensure the expertise in career education for developmentally disabled students. Fourth, parents of developmentally disabled students hope for improvements in majoring courses at special schools, including support for admission and educational programs for all students and the establishment of a lifelong education system for disabled individuals linked to majoring course graduation.

호흡요가프로그램이 지적장애를 가진 노인여성의 안정시폐활량에 미치는 영향 Effect of Breathing Yoga Program on Slow Vital Capacity in Old-aged Women with Intellectual Disabilities
This study aims to determine the effect on resting vital capacity by applying a breathing yoga program to elderly women with intellectual disabilities. The study subjects were 10 people in the experimental group and 10 people in the control group. The experimental group performed a breathing yoga program, and the control group did not apply any special exercise methods. For data processing, SPSS 27.0 statistical program was used to conduct two-way ANOVA with repeated measures to verify the difference between the means of the experimental group and the control group. If there was an interaction effect, the time point between groups was performed. A paired-t test for and one-way ANOVA will be performed between groups at each time point, and the statistical significance level is set at .05. As a result, the changes between groups include ERV and IRV did not show significant results, but IC and VT showed significant results. By time point, ERV, IC, and VT showed significant differences. Only IRV did not show significant results, but there was a pre-post difference, so continuous breathing was observed. It is believed that the practice of the yoga program can lead to effective results.From this, it can be inferred that the application of the breathing yoga program to elderly women with intellectual disabilities had a positive effect on resting lung capacity.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of reading instruction combined with FIE mediation (Reading Instruction combined with FIE) on the attention and reading fluency of elementary 3rd grade students with ADHD. Three 3rd grade ADHD students in W city, Gangwon Province, participated in the study. To evaluate the instructional effects, a multitreatment design was applied. The key findings of the study are following: First, Reading Instruction combined with FIE was more effective in improving students’ attention than Repeated Reading Instruction. Second, Reading Instruction combined with FIE was more effective in enhancing students’ reading fluency than Repeated Reading Instruction. Based on these results, the study discussed the effects of Reading Instruction combined with FIE and its implications for the reading fluency instruction of ADHD students.
